Newsletter – August As I write we are in the depths of discussions with PCNs Primary Care Networks — clusters of GPs, working together about the opportunity provided by national funding for social prescribing link workers. Ourselves and VAST have pitched a bold proposition to place this service at the heart of the local voluntary sector, by employing the workers through a consortia approach.
This would mean generalists working for ourselves and VAST, able to signpost and support patients to access the broadest range of community and voluntary sector services; instead of drawing upon medical services. I am delighted to have been present at two of our six Volunteer Star Awards this year, which have been rolled out from a firm foundation in the east of the county.
These awards have been delivered through the hard work of our local teams, supported by our countywide staff, and made possible through the generous sponsorship of local businesses and organisations. May I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who has been involved in making them happen; and there are still two to come! And even amongst the more established councillors, we have been having some very different, positive, conversations of late.

There is a poster to the left of the entrance doors announcing this Store will close in 7 days. There is a commemorative stone dated above the Gaolgate Street entrance first floor windows. It was expected that the work would take around 18 months. The newly extended and modernised Department Store contained many sections including a food hall, butchers, wine and spirits, bridal department, ladies fashions, menswear, footwear, drapery curtain and dress materials and cosmetics.
There was also a chemist and household goods section located in an older part of the building in Crabbery Street; this was rebuilt at a later date. The Restaurant continued on first floor of the building in Gaolgate Street, it was refurbished at a later date and became known as the Flamingo Restaurant. These organisations relocated at later dates. A furniture and bedding section and administrative offices were located in a separate building in Salter Street, adjacent to the Vine Hotel.
These sections relocated later to the main store to occupy areas vacated by the Bank, Insurance and Area Health Offices. Over the years the Society merged with larger regional Co-operatives and finally became part of the Midlands Co-operative Society.
